Peppermint Matcha
I’ve been drinking matcha for Y-E-A-R-S! I’m a former coffee-addict, turned matcha-lover. I now enjoy experimenting with different ways to flavor up my morning matcha, and let me tell you, peppermint and matcha are a winning combination.
I particularly enjoy this peppermint matcha latte during the cooler months, however you may wish to make an iced version and enjoy it during the summer for a refreshing mint green-tea experience.
What Is Matcha?
Unlike traditional green tea, where the leaves are steeped in water, matcha is high-grade green tea that is ground into a powder. The matcha-powder is then whisked into water then consumed. Matcha is a vibrant green color and is known to be chalked full of antioxidants.
Benefits Of Drinking Matcha
- Lower levels of caffeine as compared to coffee.
- Slow and steady release of caffeine into the body.
- High in antioxidants.
- Can help improve brain function
One of the main reasons I swapped my daily coffee for matcha is that it contains less caffeine than coffee, AND due to the amino acid L-theanine found in green tea, any caffeine-content is released slower into the body. This helps prevent the sudden jolt of energy and subsequent crash that is often followed when caffeine is consumed via a coffee-drink.
Ceremonial vs Culinary Matcha
Ceremonial grade is the highest quality matcha from the most carefully cultivated buds and leaves. It is given the most attention to detail during processing to yield the freshest, most vibrant green and delicate tasting, and smoothest ground matcha.
Culinary Matcha may include ground leaves that still have some stems and veins attached; it is usually a duller green than ceremonial grade, and it may often include a mix of matcha powder from several sources. This is the type of matcha powder you may wish to use primarily for baking.

Ingredients
- Matcha Powder: Organic ceremonial grade powder, such as Encha.
- Hot Water: You will want to use filtered or spring water. We purify our water using the Berkey Filtration System which removes over 200+ contaminants (including pathogens, pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides and inorganic minerals, heavy metals and many of the semi-volatile organic compounds often found in tap water).
- Peppermint Extract: Use any baking peppermint extract. You can also adjust the amount based on your preference.
- Dairy-Free Milk: I use my Homemade Cashew Milk for this recipe, as it’s made with dates which adds just a touch of sweetness to the Peppermint Matcha Latte. You can also use oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk or regular milk. Use whatever you enjoy!
- Collagen Peptides: Adding collagen peptides to your morning matcha is a wonderful way to sneak in some added protein, and it’s great for your skin and nails. Vital Proteins has been my go-to for years.
- Cinnamon: I love adding a sprinkle of ground cinnamon to the top of this mint matcha latte. It adds a bit of warmth and coziness to the drink.
- Maple Syrup: This is completely optional. If you’d like to add a touch of sweetness, feel free to add some organic maple syrup, honey or date syrup to this recipe.
Instructions
- Heat your filtered water, pour ¼ cup of it into a small cup and add the peppermint extract to follow.
- Place your matcha powder in a small bowl, then pour the peppermint water over the matcha powder and whisk until combined and frothy.
- Heat and froth your milk. I use this electric milk frother, which works like a gem!
- Pour ¼ cup plain hot filtered water into your mug of choice, along with 2 scoops of collagen protein powder (if you want to add a natural sweetener such as maple syrup, now is the time to do it) and stir to combine.
- Add the frothed matcha mixture into the mug and top with the frothed milk and a dash of cinnamon.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Caffeine Is In a Matcha Latte?
A matcha latte typically contains anywhere from 30-70mg of caffeine, while brewed coffee contains between 85-200mg. Ceremonial grade matcha can contain around 34 milligrams of caffeine per gram. This type of matcha is often chosen for everyday use.
What Is The Difference Between Blue Matcha and Green Matcha?
Blue matcha differs from green matcha in that it is derived from an entirely different plant. Blue matcha comes from the Clitoria ternatea plant, and does not contain caffeine. Green matcha is what I use daily, and what you will need for this recipe.
How Do I know If My Matcha Powder Is Ceremonial Grade?
Look for matcha that has a vibrant, deep green color. Typically, the deeper the shade of green is, the higher the quality Ceremonial Grade matcha. Also, most ceremonial grade matcha powders will be noted on the packaging.
What Is The Best Brand of Matcha Powder?
There are a lot of matcha powders on the market, however you will want to look for an organic and ceremonial grade powder. My favorite brand of matcha powder is Encha as the quality is fantastic, and it’s not too expensive, especially compared to other options on the market of equal quality.
How To Serve:
To me, matcha is part of my morning ritual, and I recommend enjoying this Peppermint Matcha hot, while reading a book or enjoying time in nature. The intent is not to guzzle it down on your morning commute! Take the time to enjoy the process of preparing it, then enjoying it peacefully.
You can also enjoy this Peppermint Matcha over ice. Prepare the Mint Matcha Latte the same way, then pour over ice and enjoy!
