This Gluten-Free Apple Cobbler is a simple yet delicious dessert! With warm, spiced apples and a tender, golden topping, it’s so good, that no one will even realize it’s gluten-free. It comes together in under an hour and is perfect for cozy nights, holiday gatherings, or your next BBQ.

This quick apple cobbler is one of my go-to dessert recipes, especially during the busy fall season when I don’t have time to prepare an apple pie. With just a few simple steps and high-quality ingredients, this recipe captures all the comforting flavors and textures of the classic dessert without compromising the flavor.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Gluten-Free Goodness: Enjoy all the comfort of a classic apple cobbler without the gluten.
    • Simple Real Food Ingredients: You likely already have most of the ingredients in your pantry! Also, this recipe uses all real food ingredients and no refined sugar.
    • Quick and Easy: Ready in less than an hour, this dessert is perfect for last-minute gatherings.
    • Versatile: Customize it with your favorite apples or adjust the sweetness to your liking.

    Ingredients

Labeled ingredient shot for Gluten-Free Apple Cobbler.

    For the apple filling:

    • Pink Lady or Honeycrisp Apples: For best results use fresh apples, in-season. Both these apple varieties have a slightly tart flavor but are also sweet. This helps reduce the amount of sugar you need to add.
    • Gluten-Free Flour: The gluten-free flour is used to help absorb some of the liquid in the cobbler filling. If you are not gluten-free, you can use regular all-purpose flour.
    • Lemon Juice: You will want to use fresh lemon juice, not the jarred variety. This will add a nice additional burst of flavor to your cobbler, and help the apples from oxidizing and turning brown.
    • Apple Pie Spice: I use this Apple Pie Spice from Primal Palate, which is a blend of Saigon Cinnamon, Ginger, Allspice, Cardamom, and  Nutmeg. If you don’t have this spice mix, you can either make your own or substitute it with cinnamon and nutmeg.
    • Coconut Sugar: Coconut sugar is not refined, and a great replacement for white sugar.
    • Unsalted Butter: If possible, use a good quality unsalted butter like Kerrygold. If you cannot handle butter, you can also use ghee.

    For the cobbler topping:

    • Gluten-Free Flour: You can use any gluten free flour blend, however, I prefer 1:1 baking flour like Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 Gluten Free Flour. Of course, if you don’t want to make this gluten-free, you can use regular flour.
    • Sea Salt: Adding salt to a dessert may seem odd, but salt helps bring out all the flavors. Don’t skip it! I like using Redmond Real Salt.
    • Baking Powder: Is used as a leavening agent. It helps to lighten the cobbler topping.
    • Coconut Oil: I like the flavor of Dr. Bronners Coconut Oil. It adds a touch of sweetness and keeps the dessert feeling a little lighter. If you don’t like using coconut oil you can also use melted butter or ghee..
    • Maple Syrup: Maple syrup is a natural sweetener, which is one of the reasons I love it. If possible, get yourself an organic maple syrup with no additives.
    • Vanilla Extract: Vanilla adds additional warmth and flavor to the cobbler topping.
    • Apple Pie Spice: Again, substitute cinnamon here if that’s what you have on hand. It will still taste great.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Substitutions And Variations

    • Flour Swaps: You can use almond flour, almond meal, oat flour, or any gluten-free flour blend instead of the 1:1 gluten-free flour. Also, feel free to make this with regular all-purpose flour if you are not gluten-free.
    • Sugar: If you like things on the sweeter side, you may want to add a little more coconut sugar. You could also use brown sugar if you prefer.
    • Different Apples: Feel free to experiment with a different variety of apples. If you prefer sweet apples you can try making this easy dessert with golden delicious apples.

    How To Make Apple Cobbler

This is an overview with step-by-step photos. Full ingredients & instructions are in the recipe card below.

Step 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Sliced apples in a glass bowl covered with apple pie spice mixture.

Step 2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, 1 tablespoon of gluten-free flour, lemon juice, apple pie spice, and coconut sugar. Stir gently until the flour has dissolved.

The cobbler dough in white bowl.

Step 3. In a small bowl, combine 1 cup gluten-free flour, sea salt, baking powder, melted coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and apple pie spice. Mix well until a smooth dough forms.

The sliced apples in a pie dish with a bowl of cobbler topping next to it.

Step 4. Transfer the apple slices into a greased 9x9 baking or pie dish, and add a few pats of butter on top of the coated apples, then top with the dough. You can drop pieces of dough onto the top of the apples for a more rustic approach, or press the dough out and use a biscuit cutter to create uniform pieces.

Step 5. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the fruit is bubbling and the topping is golden brown.

Remove from the oven and allow the cobbler to set for 10-15 min. Serve warm or at room temperature. Add a scoop of your favorite ice cream on top if you choose!

    Expert Tips And Notes

Use a mix of tart and sweet apples like Pink Lady and Honeycrisp to balance the flavors in your cobbler. This combination will give your dessert a depth of flavor and texture.

What To Serve With Apple Cobbler

    • Vanilla ice cream: I can't think of a better pairing than apple cobbler and vanilla ice cream!
    • Whipped cream: Top with some homemade whipped cream. It's light and airy, a perfect contrast to the warm cobbler.
    • Caramel sauce: Drizzle over the cobbler for an extra layer of sweetness.
    • Hot Coffee Or Tea: Serve alongside a Pumpkin Spice Latte, or Iced Maple Latte for all the fall vibes!

    Storage And Reheating

    • Refrigerate: Store any leftover cobbler in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
    • Freeze: You can freeze the cobbler for up to 2 months. To freeze, wrap the cooled cobbler tightly in plastic wrap and aluminum foil.
    • Reheat: To reheat, bake in a 300-degree oven for 5-10 minutes or until warmed through. If frozen, thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

    Recipe FAQs

    Do Honeycrisp apples bake well?

Yes, they are one of my favorites to bake with. They have a nice balance of sweet and tart and also hold their shape well.

Can I make this cobbler ahead of time?

Yes! You can prepare the apple filling and topping separately up to a day in advance. Assemble and bake when ready to serve.

How do I know when the cobbler is done?

The topping should be golden brown, and you should see the apple filling bubbling around the edges of the dish.
