This easy Smoked Hot Dogs recipe is perfect for your next cook-out. All you have to do is score them, then set 'em, and forget 'em! The result is a juicy hot dog with a delicious smoke flavor that everyone will enjoy.

Along with Smoked Hamburgers, Smoked hot dogs on our Traeger Grill have quickly become a household favorite. While I do love the grilled version, I think the best versions are made on a pellet smoker. The slow smoke provides an incredible flavor that you can't get when using a charcoal grill or gas grill.

I love making these juicy dogs because they are so incredibly easy, require very little prep work, and taste absolutely delicious! All you have to do is score the dogs, and place them on the smoker—I mean it doesn't get much easier than that!

You can serve this simple recipe alongside my Smashed Potato Salad, Potato Salad With Spring Onions, Turkish Potato Salad, or Easy Coleslaw—All of which pair well with the smoky flavor of this hot dog recipe.

For a full Traeger menu, try pairing it with my Smoked Scalloped Potatoes, Smoked Beans, and Smoked Cream Cheese.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Super Simple: This is an easy recipe that requires minimal effort! Just put the dogs on the grill and go chill!
    • Perfect For Parties: It's the best way to feed a crowd at your next backyard BBQ! Everyone loves a good hot dog—and they can customize the toppings.

    Ingredients

Grass-Fed Hot Dogs on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper.
    • Hot Dogs:  If possible you want to go with a high-quality, grass-fed beef version. My favorites are made by Teton Waters Ranch, which is 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef. Applegate Organics also makes a grass-fed beef version, if you can’t find Teton Waters Ranch, Applegate would be a great choice. Also, CharcutNuvo makes a variety of organic sausages that would work great as well.
    • Hot Dog Buns: Use your favorite buns!

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Substitutions and Variations

    • Use Different Dogs: Chicken sausage, Polish Sausage, or Turkey Dogs would all be good substitutes if you don’t eat beef, or if you just want to mix things up!
    • Add A Rub: You can certainly season your dogs with your favorite dry rub,  or combine garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder, brown sugar, sea salt, and black pepper to make an all-purpose rub.

Step 4. Smoke at 250 for 60-90 minutes. The cooking time may vary depending on the type you use. If using uncooked, make sure you check the internal temperature to ensure doneness.

Step 5. Remove from the grill and enjoy with your favorite toppings and favorite condiments.

    Expert Tips And Notes

    • Score Your Dogs: Be sure to score your hot dogs! You can either make slits as shown in the photos, or you can cut them in a crosshatch pattern. This will help the edges crisp up, and it also allows more of the delicious smoky flavor to penetrate the inside of the hot dog.
    • Don't Skimp On Quality: Use a good quality grass-fed hot dog and high-quality condiments.

    Storage and Reheating

    • Storage: If you do have leftovers, store them in an airtight container for 2-3 days in the refrigerator.

    Recipe FAQs

What flavor of wood chips or pellets are best for smoking hot dogs?

Hickory, Mesquite, Cherry wood, and Oak are all solid options. But feel free to use your favorite wood chips.

Do I need to season the hot dogs before smoking them?

You do not need to season them with anything before smoking. You can certainly get creative and play around with adding a bit of your favorite seasonings, however, I find that the dogs are so flavorful that no seasoning is needed.
