This easy and creamy Guacamole Without Onion will become your go-to dip for every occasion! Made with fresh avocados and simple ingredients, it’s perfect for Taco Tuesday or even as a sandwich spread. Whip it up in under 5 minutes for a no-fuss, dip everyone will love.

A bowl of guacamole garnished with parsley, surrounded by tortilla chips on a textured cloth. A halved lime is placed nearby on a dark wooden surface.

If you’ve ever avoided guacamole because of the sharp bite of raw onion, this recipe is for you! Removing the onion lets the buttery avocado and tangy lime take center stage.

I love a good basic guacamole recipe, and I’ve been making this no-onion guacamole recipe for years. It’s simple, fresh, and the creamy avocados are the star of the show.

It's perfect on top of avocado toast or served on top of my Gluten-Free Enchiladas, Dutch Oven Chili, or Dutch Oven Barbacoa. It also makes for a healthy snack when served with fresh-cut veggies or crackers.

For more delicious dips and sauces check out my Mango Habanero Salsa, Traeger Smoked Cream Cheese, Creamy Yogurt Dill Sauce, or Hot Honey Mustard Sauce.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Quick And Easy: This is a simple recipe and Everything comes together in under 5 minutes! It's perfect for meal prep or game day.
    • Customizable: Add more lime juice or salt to suit your preferences. You can also experiment with toppings or add-ins to make it your own.
    • Real Food Ingredients: No strange oils or gums here! Everything is made with basic ingredients that you can pronounce.

    Ingredients

A bowl of mashed avocado with a wooden pestle, labeled Sea Salt. Half an avocado and half a lime are on a wooden surface, labeled Avocado and Lime.
    • Avocados: Choose creamy ripe, fresh avocados. Hass avocados are my favorite as they are super creamy and rich. When choosing an avocado, you'll want to use one that is relatively soft to the touch.
    • Lime: Fresh squeezed lime juice, none of that stuff from the bottle! We are using only a handful of ingredients, so we want them to be super fresh. If you don’t have limes on hand, you can substitute with lemons.
    • Sea Salt or Kosher Salt: Salt is important in this dish, as it really helps bring out the flavor of the avocado. Start with a little and continue to add to taste.
    • Flakey Sea Salt: Flakey Sea Salt is optional, but I love adding a pinch on top of this easy guacamole recipe for a little extra crunch and flavor.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Substitutions And Variations

    • Add-Ins: You can play with the ingredients. Try adding in sliced cherry tomatoes, or grape tomatoes, a little bit of fresh cilantro, and freshly grated garlic. If you do enjoy onions, a little bit of minced red onion can work well.
    • Chunky Guacamole: If you like your guac on the chunky side, then leave some larger chunks of avocado.
    • Extra Creamy: If you want an extra creamy, tangy version, try adding a little bit of plain Greek Yogurt.  You can also add all ingredients to a food processor and pulse until creamy.
    • Spice It Up: You can also spice this simple guacamole up a bit! Try adding in diced Jalapenos, chili peppers, hot sauce, black pepper, garlic powder, or onion powder.

How To Make This Simple Guacamole Recipe

This is an overview with step-by-step photos. Full ingredients & instructions are in the recipe card below.

A wooden spoon mashing avocado in a white bowl on a rustic wooden surface. Beside the bowl, there is a halved avocado with the pit and a halved lime. The scene is set for preparing fresh guacamole or an avocado dish.

Step 1. Peel the avocado flesh and add it to a large bowl. With a fork or potato masher, mash the avocado. Be sure to leave some chunks, as this should not be as smooth as a true dip.

A wooden bowl filled with creamy guacamole is placed on a rustic wooden board alongside corn tortilla chips. In the background, theres a halved avocado and two lime halves, adding fresh, vibrant green accents.

Step 2. Add the lime juice and salt to the mashed avocados and combine. Taste for seasonings and add more salt or lime juice as needed. Top with a pinch of flakey sea salt.

    Nadia's Expert Tips And Notes

    • Mashing: This guac shouldn’t be super smooth. You will want to leave a few smaller chunks of avocado for texture.
    • No Lime: If you don’t have fresh lime juice on hand, feel free to substitute it with lemon juice.
    • Choose The Right Avocado: If you hold the avocado in your hand and give it a gentle squeeze and the avocado gives a little, you know it’s ripe and ready to eat! Additionally, when a Hass avocado is ripe, its skin will turn from green to a purplish-black color.
    • Season It Well: Don’t be afraid of adding salt! This recipe only has a few ingredients and the salt will help bring out the flavors.
    • Use Fresh Ingredients: This recipe calls for simple ingredients, so you want to ensure you are using good quality, fresh ingredients.

    What To Serve With Guacamole

    • Dippers: Pair your guacamole with crunchy tortilla chips, pita chips, crackers, or fresh veggies.
    • Taco Toppings: Guacamole adds a creamy touch to grilled shrimp tacos, barbacoa tacos, or chicken street tacos. Just spread a dollop on your tortilla before piling on the fillings for extra flavor.
    • Quesadillas and Nachos: Use guacamole as a side or topping for cheesy barbacoa quesadillas, loaded nachos, or any Tex-Mex-inspired dish.
    • Protein Pairings: Serve it alongside grilled steak, grilled salmon, or smoked chicken for a fresh and flavorful accompaniment to proteins.
    • Salads and Bowls: Guacamole is a fantastic addition to taco salads, burrito bowls, or grain bowls.
    • Breakfast: Spread it over your favorite toast and top with eggs, or serve alongside high protein egg bites or as a topping for sheet pan breakfast hash.

    Storage And Reheating

    • Storage: Place leftover guacamole in an airtight container and add an extra squeeze of fresh lime juice on top. Press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface to prevent browning, and refrigerate for up to 2 days.
    • Reheating: There is no need to reheat this delicious dip. You can set it on the counter and allow it to come up to room temperature if you like.

    Recipe FAQs

How do I ripen an avocado?

If your grocery store only has hard avocados or unripe avocados you can leave them on the counter in a brown paper bag. Doing so will trap the ethylene gas that the fruit releases after harvesting, which will speed up the ripening process.

How do I keep my guacamole from turning brown?

Avocados and in turn, guacamole turn brown due to oxidation. To help prevent and minimize browning on guacamole, try adding a thin layer of lime juice over the top. Next cover the dish with a piece of plastic wrap, pushing the plastic wrap down so it is in contact with the guacamole.

Can I use bottled lime juice instead of fresh?

You can, but I don't recommend it!  Fresh lime juice gives the best flavor, bottled lime juice works in a pinch. If your only option is bottled lime juice make sure it's high quality for the closest taste.
